Obituary

Roberta Mavine (Barfield) Smith was born on October 18, 1934 in LeFors, TX the youngest child to Rosa Paralee (Ayres) and Robert Guy Barfield. She passed away September 16, 2024 in Sayre, OK at the age of 89 years, 11 months.

During her early childhood it was back and forth from the Texas panhandle and western Oklahoma areas to Modesto, CA as her parents worked in the Canneries during the season. Her parents acquired a farm near the Meridian Community in Oklahoma where Roberta began her school years. Some called Roberta a tomboy because she worked and played hard. When the school at Meridian closed she attended Sweetwater school. Roberta loved to read and also became a star basketball player. After graduation she was asked to try out for an adult ladies traveling basketball team called the "Red Heads". She was quick to say no as she married the love of her life, Donald Lee Smith on May 31, 1953 in Erick, Oklahoma. Roberta was a partner with Don in all of their farming and cattle operations. As a mother, Roberta was active with her children in their school activities. She and Don also served as class parents. Roberta was a pioneer with the Sagebrush program in Sayre, OK. She enjoyed painting and several of her pieces are still in some of her relatives' homes. After all the children graduated they moved to Branson, MO. Roberta worked on the "Branson Bell" and was honored as an outstanding employee. In 2008 they moved to Hart, TX. After Don's passing in 2018, Roberta moved back to Erick, OK.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Paralee; husband, Don; brother, Harry Barfield; sister, Wanda Fourier; one grandson, Curtis.

Roberta is survived by her children, Sandy (Paul) Hilgendorf, Jerry Don Smith, Robert (Becky) Smith and Donald Lee Smith II; 4 grandchildren, Jennifer, Sara, Kevin and Robyn; 2 great grandchildren, Seth and Judah; 1 great-great grandchild, Maddie; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
