Peggy
Patten
Jan 3, 1938 — Jan 2, 2026
Peggy Jo Patten was born January 3rd, 1938 in Gainsville, Texas to Mildred (Turner) and Joseph Albert Jones. She passed away at her home in Sayre, Oklahoma on Friday, January 2nd, 2026 at the age of 87 years, 11 months and 30 days.
Peggy grew up in Elk City, Oklahoma where she was baptized during the time she was in junior high. She attended and graduated from Elk City High School and furthered her education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University where she obtained her bachelors degree and later her masters in education. Peggy began her career in education at Reydon Public Schools where she spent over 2 years before obtaining a position at Elk City Public Schools. She saw an opportunity to fill a visiting teaching position in North Carolina and ended up moving her mother to the east coast with her. Peggy and her mother returned to Elk City where she continued her career as an educator for the next 18 plus years. It was during this time that she was reacquainted with Jack Eugene Patten and they were later married on December 1st, 1979. Together they briefly lived in Elk City before making their home in the Sayre community on the Patten family centennial farm. Peggy continued teaching at Sayre in the public school system and later at Western Oklahoma Technology Center before her retirement from education. Not being one to sit idle, she found employment with Sagebrush until she formally retired to the farm with Gene.
Peggy valued education, reading and took great interest in her past students as well as her volunteer work after her retirement. Her long list of accomplishments and accolades span from two time Teacher of the Year, activity in the PEO organization and Delta Kappa Gamma sorority, and even the Elk City Business and Professional Women club. Her faith was also important to Peggy as she could regularly be found singing in the choir, playing the bells, and teaching adult and childrens Bible classes. In what little time she had aside from church and education, Peggy enjoyed traveling, crocheting, painting, reading, playing the piano and embroidery.
She is preceded in death by her parents and husband.
