Nick spent his childhood in Downers Grove and Westmont, Illinois. He graduated from Westmont High School in 1962. Nick found employment at various places in states including Illinois and Wisconsin before settling in Minnesota in the early 1970's. He later met a woman by the name of Janice (Haider) at a dance and they were later married on July 29th, 1972 in Finland, Minnesota. After the plant ceased operation, he was a charter captain on Lake Superior as well as owned and operated a bait shop. Nick then attended tech school where he received his associates degree in Civil Engineering. Together he and Janice moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where he found employment with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. They later moved to Circle Pines, Minnesota before his retirement.

Having family in the Roger Mills County area, Nick and Janice came down for a visit and returned to Minnesota having a new residence in Cheyenne, Oklahoma and needing to pack and move. In 2010 they made the move where they spent their retirement years. Nick enjoyed fishing, fly tying, camping, riding his motorcycles, and spending time with his family and friends.
