Joan
"Jody" Stallings
Jul 15, 1933 — Jan 20, 2024
Ada Joan Stallings was born July 15th, 1933 to Florence Grace (Brewer) and Burt Fate Hayes in Collingsworth County, Texas which was disputed land between Oklahoma and Texas. this land later became Oklahoma land and is located on Highway 9 between Vinson, Oklahoma and Wellington, Texas. The community was called Madge, Oklahoma. She passed from this life on Saturday, January 20th, 2024 in Leedey, Oklahoma.
Joyce, Jody's older sister, was born in the same house but in a different state because the state line was being contested. She was the fourth child of eight born to Burt Fate and Florence Grace (Brewer) Hayes. She grew up on a cotton farm, and was a hard worker. Her Grandma Brewer gave her the nickname, "Jody". Life on the farm was hard and Jody always helped with household chores like bringing coal and kindling for the coal stove. Jody also washed dishes, helped cook, separated milk, outside of course she had to pull and hoe cotton, and shock feed. She attended school at Vinson, Oklahoma. Jody loved school but she did play hookey once and got caught and received a paddling from one of her favorite teachers, Mr. Best. Her favorite subject was English.
Jody was married to Duane Myers in 1950. To this union three children were born, Brenda, was born in 1952, and twins Jerry and Terry were born in 1953. Since the children were so close in age, they were sometimes mistaken as triplets. In Jody's words, "I wanted to be a model when I was growing up, as it happened, I didn't get very tall so my plans changed and I decided to be a teacher." She attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma for her teaching degree. Jody and her daughter, Brenda, were in college at the same time. Jody received an Elementary Education degree and taught in Oklahoma, Texas, and Memphis, Tennessee. After retiring from teaching, Jody moved to Leedey, Oklahoma to be closer to her family in 1997. She became a care-giver for Winnie Switzer and enjoyed this job for many years. Jody retired and continued to live in Leedey where she never stopped enjoying life and could often be seen square dancing in Crawford and around town living life to the fullest.
As Jody's health declined, she became a resident of Baptist Village in Elk City for 5 years until she came to live with her daughter and son-in-law. She was always positive and loved life. She was devoted to her family and passionately loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Some describe her as a firecracker. Jody was a faithful member of the Church of Christ her entire life.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Burt and Grace; brothers, Calvin and Kenneth; sisters, Joyce, Florence, Lucille, and Dot; children Jerry and Terry; great granddaughter, Hannah Hughes.
