Obituary

James Earl Cavason was born in a creek June 8th, 1933 to Addie (Espy) and Lawrance Adrain Cavasos. He passed away at his home north of Elk City on Thursday, April 11th, 2024 at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 3 days.

James, known by most as "Poppy", grew up in Leedey, Oklahoma where he began school. He moved with his family to Clinton, Oklahoma where he also attended school. Poppy found employment as a young man at a small diner in Clinton where he cooked and washed dishes. In 1953 he entered the United States Air Force where he served during the Korean Conflict. It was during his time in the service that he met Carolyn June (Shelby) and they were later married in 1954. Together they made their home where he was stationed in Kansas until his discharge when they moved to Wheatland, California. He found employment at a walnut ranch where he worked his way up to the title of foreman. They continued to raise their family and live in California. After Carolyn passed away in 1999 Poppy remained their until 2006 when he moved to Hammon so he could be near his grandson and great grandchildren. Poppy tinkered with cars and motors, gardened, caring for his yard, and having a good barbecue with his family, friends, and especially his great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; grandson, Chelmer Williams; 2 sisters, Ethel, and Nina Dean; 2 brothers, Elmer, and Harvey.

Poppy is survived by 3 children, Pat, North Carolina, Carolyn Louise, California, and Barbara, Hammon, Oklahoma; 2 grandchildren, Christopher and Tommy; granddaughter-in-law, Misty Williams; 2 great grandchildren, Jeremiah, and Jaylee Williams; 2 sisters, Verna Mae and Mary; special friend and neighbor, Sonny Thomas and a host of other relatives and friends.
