Dora Jean Woods was born on September 27, 1931, to Lillie Mae and Sam Davis in Mayfield, Oklahoma. She was the fourth of five daughters. She attended school at Bulo, Berlin, Sweetwater, and Burns Flat, where she graduated as the Valedictorian of her senior class at Burns Flat High School in 1949. Growing up, she and her sisters all learned to play the piano and sang in a gospel quartet for many years led by their father, Sam Davis, participating in gospel music singing conventions around the western Oklahoma area.

Dora Jean began college at Southwestern State College in Weatherford, but returned home after one semester to help her parents work on their farm. She later met and married the love of her life, James Clark ("Jimmy") Woods. They made their home in Weatherford while Jimmy attended pharmacy school. Following his graduation from pharmacy school, they moved to Sayre where Jimmy joined his father in running his pharmacy business, the City Pharmacy. They soon welcomed three children to their family, Charles, Janie, and Kelly. Dora Jean became a full-time homemaker. She also taught Sunday School for 30 years, Bible School, Children's Choir, and sang in the church choir at the First Baptist Church for over 50 years.

Dora Jean loved children. Her nieces would come out and stay entire summers with Jimmy and her every summer. Later, when their grandchildren came along, they would always stay every summer with them. You could always find Dora Jean at the Sayre swimming pool in the summertime along with her children, grandchildren, nieces, friends, and anyone else who wanted to go to the swimming pool. She taught many kids how to swim. She loved picking up her friends and going to get a Dr. Pepper every morning. She was also an amazing seamstress. She made clothes for her mother, her daughters, her granddaughter, and her nieces and even made a few wedding dresses and veils. She also made lots and lots of Barbie clothes and costumes for school and church programs.

Dora Jean loved to cook for her family and friends. There was always an extra place at the dinner table for family and friends who dropped by or when her children had company over. She also loved to bake desserts for her family, friends, church functions, and others around town.

Dora Jean was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters (Edna, Lovelle, Juanell, and Loretta), and her husband Jimmy.

She is survived by her children, Charles Woods, Janie Poff and husband Randy, and Kelly Woods, all of Oklahoma City; one grandson, Landon Poff of Encino, California; one granddaughter, Faryn Ballard and husband Matt of Oklahoma City; two great-granddaughters, Lucy-James Poff and Rowan Poff of Encino, California; and one great-grandson, Elan Ballard of Oklahoma City.
