Curtis Lee Coffey was born August 4, 1936 in his parent's farm home in the Mayfield Community to Marcus Thurston and Ruby Pearl (Walker) Coffey. He passed away Tuesday August 29, 2023 at Bell Avenue Nursing Home in Elk City, OK at the age of 87 years and 25 days.

Curtis grew up in and around the Bulo, Mayfield and Sweetwater communities. Curtis attended Sweetwater High School where he graduated from there in May 1954. He helped his parents run the family dairy for a while before he moved in with his Aunt Ethel and Uncle Ed in Borger, TX. While in Borger, Curtis worked at Phillips Petroleum for a while and went to Frank Phillips Jr. College. It was when Curtis was in Borger around that time, he enlisted in the U.S. Army at Amarillo, TX in the Fall of 1958. Curtis did his Boot Camp in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. After his Boot Camp, Curtis returned to Western Oklahoma and went to Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Curtis went there for about a year before he transferred in his Junior year to Oklahoma State University. It was there Curtis was working on his degree Agronomy with a Business option. When he was at OSU, he was a member of the Alpha/Zeta Fraternity. Before he could finish his degree, the U.S. Army called him back in again in the Winter of 1962. This time in the U.S. Army, Curtis served for 8 months in Fort Polk, Louisiana. After that, Curtis went back to OSU, to finish his original degree, but his courses to finish his degree were not held in the semester he returned. So, he switched to General Agriculture and graduated with a BS degree in Agriculture in December 1962. Shortly afterward, Curtis and a few men got in a car to get jobs as Assistant County Ag agents in Texas. They were all hired on the spot. After his training in Vernon, TX, Curtis was assigned to be the Assistant County Ag agent in Greenville, TX for a while. During the time he was there, Curtis was an eyewitness to the events of the Kennedy Assassination in Dallas, TX on November 22, 1963. (Greenville is about 45 miles away to the northeast of Dallas.) About 1964, Curtis went back to OSU to try and get his Masters Degree in Agriculture but didn't finish it. Also, in October 1964, Curtis was Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Army after his 6 years obligation.

In 1965, with the help of his parents, he was starting his own dairy farm. During that same year, Curtis met his future wife, with the help of Adelle Coffey, Helen Ernestine Brindle. They were married, January 1, 1966 in the Erick Nazarene Church. They made their home at the dairy farm Curtis and others help built a mile east of Sweetwater Schools. They lived and had their 2 children during the time they were on their dairy for about 5 years. In 1971, Curtis and Helen sold the dairy and moved themselves and their family to a rent house in Sayre, OK. They were there for about 6 months while the family's home was being built in the location where their family farm is located today. The family moved in to the new house the last week of 1971 and been there ever since. With the purchase of property across the road around 1972, Curtis started a cow/calf operation with six of his former dairy cows. Curtis had a full operation going until July 2006 when he sold the land, shrunk the herd down and moved the operation back across the road to the home place. Curtis didn't fully get out of the cow/calf business until 2011 when he sold the remaining six cattle he had left.

During the time and a bit after the cow/calf operation, Curtis worked in jobs in Sayre and Elk City. Some of the jobs Curtis worked at included, help build two bridges east of Sayre on Timber Creek and a purchasing agent in the oil field during the Oil Boom. Helped move the Elk City Lumberyard from downtown to the current South Main location, worked for Gene Cobb to set-up auctions and worked twice for G.H. Dodson. Once in the 1970's when Mr. Dodson owned Dorate and then again for Mr. Dodson and family from 1986 to 2013 when he retired out of his job as maintenance man for them. Curtis was a member of the American Legion Post 146 in Sayre.

Curtis lost his love of his life, Helen, died in December 2012 and after 46 years of marriage. For the rest of Curtis' days, he enjoyed reading, from books to newspapers, talking with others, love to listen to and sing Country and Christian music including for a time when he was with the Sayre Baptist Church choir, gardening and loved spending time with family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; 2 brothers, Lyndall D. and Ivan L. Coffey; 1 sister I. Charlene (Coffey) Alexis; 3 brothers-in-law; Vincent A. Alexis, Alvin E. Flowers, and William R. Brindle; 2 sisters-in-law, B. June (Clancy) Brindle and Phyllis L. (Brindle) Flowers.

Curtis is survived by his 2 daughters, Aveta E. Coffey and Kimberly B. Coffey and 1 granddaughter Brianna L. P. Coffey, all of Sayre, OK; 1 brother, Jim D. and his wife Estelline Coffey of Elk City, OK; 1 brother-in-law; Clyde R. A. Brindle of Erick, OK; 2 sisters-in-law, Joyce A. Harrison of Glendora, CA and Rita Coffey of Wiley, TX and a host of other relatives and friends.
