Obituary

Bobby James Dungan, 88, passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 in Oklahoma City.

Bobby was born to John and Gracie Dungan on December 29, 1935. He was the oldest of five children and grew up in the Delhi and Doxey communities. After graduating from Sayre High School, he attended Southwestern State College in Weatherford and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education and also earned his Master of Teaching degree. He grew up near Delhi, where he met Gwen Kelley and they were married in December, 1961. From that union came three children: Kevin Dungan, Michelle Martinez and Heather Mendez.

Bobby's passion for teaching was evident. He attended many math, science and chemistry Institutes over the years and loved teaching his high school kids. After starting his teaching career at Carnegie High School, he continued teaching at Palos Verdes Estates, CA, but spent the majority of his time as a teacher in Dalhart, Miami and Canadian, Texas.

After retiring from teaching, Bobby spent time with friends and family and went fishing as often as possible. After moving to Grace Living Center in Mangum, he wanted to do more and give more, so he offered to be a volunteer math tutor to the students at Mangum High School. The principal said "he didn't want money for his tutoring, he just wanted to share what he knew with students. He was just looking for someone to help." The principal also stated "this is truly a special man who decided that life comes not from what you get, but from what you give. He is a good role model to the young and an example to older folks that life does not end when you retire."

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Gracie Dungan, and brother, Jack Dungan all of Sayre.

He is survived by son, Kevin Dungan of Delhi, daughter Michelle Martinez and husband Tim of Oklahoma City, daughter Heather Mendez of Altus, brothers Johnny Dungan and wife Carolann, Elmo Dungan and wife Loa, and sister Patty Hudson and husband Doyle. Bobby has six grandchildren: Zenaida Dungan Sarile, Marisa and Camryn Martinez, Kylee Ramirez, Emily and Braden Mendez. He also has 3 great-grandchildren: Luke, Kinsley and Elio.

There was no bigger laugh than Bobby's. His humor and wit remained until his last days. He loved his family and friends and was so very proud of them. 'Good ol' Bob'…He will be missed by many.

A family graveside service will be held later in the spring.
