Bernita Webb Lookingbill was born in 1941 at Beaver, Oklahoma, to Guss and Gladys Webb of Rural Route Guymon, Oklahoma. She was raised 19 1/2 miles north of Guymon. She graduated from Guymon High School in 1959.
Bernita attended Panhandle State University, where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education in 1963. While in college, she was in the Honor Society, President of National Education club, as well as a member of Student Council and Dorm Governing Board.
Bernita received her Master's Degree in Elementary Education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1973 and finished the Reading Specialty program in 1986.
She taught 33 years in Elementary Education before retiring in 2001. She taught 4th and 5th grade music in addition to grade four at Stillwater. She taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade music at Merritt School for 3 years as well as grade one. She also taught grades two and four at Merritt.
Bernita taught at Guymon, Crescent, Stillwater, and McAlester before coming to Merritt in the fall of 1973. She was nominated for Who's Who Among Teachers in America several times and was Teacher of the Year at Merritt in 1991.
Bernita married Bill Lookingbill in 1963, but they later divorced. Their two boys are Bobby Don Lookingbill of Elk City, Oklahoma, and Dr. Brad Lookingbill of Columbia, Missouri.
Bernita was very active in her church work. She began playing the piano for church when she was 14 and continued at many churches over the years until health issues caused her to quit in 2004. She worked in children's church, taught an adult Sunday School class for 7 years, remained an altar worker, served as Vice President of a women's ministry, and spoke at many meetings.
Bernita died on July 29, 2025, at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by Bill, her parents, two sisters, a brother, and several in-laws.
She is survived by her son Bobby Lookingbill; her son Brad Lookingbill, his wife Deidra Moses Lookingbill, and their two children Augustus Lookingbill and Beatrice Lookingbill; numerous nieces, nephews, relations, and friends.
She will be laid to rest in the Fairlawn Cemetery at Elk City, Oklahoma.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to The Gideons or First Assembly of God church for missions.
